The first rail freeway in Spain, which will link Valencia and Madrid, will begin operating in the first week of July 2024. This new rail service, called Autopista Ferroviaria Puerto de Valencia-Madrid Abroñigal, seeks to improve the efficiency of freight transport between these two cities and establish a strategic bridge to Italy.

The initial service will have a daily connection, allowing the transport of up to 40 semi-trailers in 20 wagons in each direction, which could transfer more than 15,000 trucks per year from road to rail. This project has required significant investments by the precursors of this project: Trans Italia, Tramesa and the Port Authority of Valencia. The investments include the purchase of P400 semi-trailers by Trans Italia and the purchase of rail cars and a gantry crane by Tramesa.

This project is in line with the goals of the European Commission’s Sustainable and Intelligent Mobility Strategy and the national initiative Mercancías 30, which seek to increase the use of rail for freight transport. And the SDG goals.
