Environment

Committed to our environment

We have chosen a transition model towards a circular economy that will guarantee sustainable growth over time, promoting natural resource optimisation, reducing the use of raw material and reusing waste products by recycling and giving them new life.

We promote resource circularity in our business activities

Plastics
solutions

We offer sustainable solutions for packaging, containers, agriculture and geosynthetics.

Forestry
management

We sustainably manage over 3,500 hectares of forest land.

Renewable
energy

We produce renewable energy from the waste biomass originating from our forests.

Railway transportation

We transport goods using a safe, high-quality and sustainable logistics service.

Environmental Goals for 2030

We have defined our governance goals for 2030 with a view to a more responsible future, in alignment with global challenges. These goals can be divided into two main lines of action: sustainability in the value chain, and fostering a culture based on corporate ethics and compliance.

GOCIRCULARPLASTICS

We have developed a plastics sustainability plan based on a transition model towards a circular economy, promoting changes in the industry towards the use of circular plastics.

Climate change and emissions

Our commitment to decarbonization

At the Armando Alvarez Group, we address current challenges in terms of emissions and climate change. We determine the environmental impacts generated by the Group’s companies and implement different measures to reduce our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and minimize the impact that our activities can have on the environment. We do this through measurable actions aligned with global climate objectives.

In 2025, we made significant progress by setting ambitious targets to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. We are focused on reducing absolute direct GHG emissions and managing indirect emissions from our value chain.

What are our decarbonization targets for 2033?

  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 55.2%.

  • Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 34.7%.

Committed to science-based climate action

Our targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, confirming that they are aligned with climate science and the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement. SBTi is an internationally recognized organization that assesses and validates companies’ emissions reduction targets, ensuring that they are consistent with the levels of decarbonization required to meet the Paris Agreement targets. This validation reinforces the transparency of our climate strategy and demonstrates our commitment to the transition to a low-carbon economy.

We support the global initiative CARBON DISCLOSURE PROJECT (CDP)

Since 2022 we participate in the CDP project, a powerful initiative that involves companies, investors and governments in a joint effort to publicise, measure and manage carbon emissions. By joining forces, all of the stakeholders can identify areas for improvement and opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint.

We continue to promote change, guided by our determination to build a more sustainable world, facing the environmental challenges head-on.

We are carbon neutral*

Since 2021, we have obtained the Carbon Neutral Declaration annually, offsetting 100% of our emissions, which we are currently unable to reduce.

While our goal is to directly reduce our emissions, we use reliable offsetting mechanisms to mitigate our environmental impact. Thanks to the extensive plantations managed by Alvarez Forestal, a company belonging to the Group, we are able to neutralize our impact while continuing to move towards decarbonization.

* (in scopes 1 and 2)

Would you like to reduce your environmental impact by offsetting your emissions?

At Alvarez Forestal we absorb much more emissions than the Group produces. If you need to offset your carbon footprint, contact us and we will provide you with information on how to offset it.

Sustainable and efficient resources

Within our ongoing improvement strategy, we work to ensure an efficient use of the resources and raw materials that we use in our production processes. We promote a culture of environmental awareness among employees, because participation by all of the organisation members in identifying opportunities for savings and implementing sustainable practises is key to achieving significant results.

Raw materials

We use the highest-quality raw materials in the manufacture of our plastic products. We prioritise the use of certified recycled materials, as well as bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable materials, to guarantee the sustainability of our supply sources.

We are also committed to efficient practises and conservation, in alignment with our undertaking to promote a circular economy.

Water

We implement efficient measures and practises to reduce consumption and minimise water waste. To this end we installed technologies and management systems to optimise its use at each stage of production. This includes the use of more efficient closed-circuit equipment and processes that reduce water consumption by over 90%, compared to open systems.

Electricity

Reducing energy consumption and implementing energy efficiency measures is another one of our priorities. 97% of the Group companies’ energy consumption comes from 100% renewable sources. We also have Biomasa de Cantabria, our electricity central that is in the renewable energy sector. It generates 10.8 megawatts using as fuel forestry waste biomass that originates from another of the Group’s companies, Alvarez Forestal.

ECOinitiatives

We participate in several initiatives that generate a positive impact on our environment.

We preserve biodiversity

We know it is important to maintain and preserve natural ecosystems and the species living there in order to guarantee a sustainable future. To achieve this goal, we have implemented a wide range of measures and policies that prove our commitment to environmental protection.

We perform a prior analysis of the significant direct and indirect impacts on biodiversity, taking into account the effects on vegetation and fauna, the landscape, changes in air quality and nuisances to the surrounding population.

We adopt responsible business practises that minimise our impact on ecosystems:

  • We use natural resources efficiently

  • We reduce waste generation in our manufacturing processes

  • We use renewable energy sources

  • We sustainably manage over 3,500 hectares of forest land

  • We have a responsible procurement policy in place

  • We promote sustainable agricultural practises
