Energy

Biomasa de Cantabria is an energy plant in the renewable energy sector. It generates 10 Mw/hour, equivalent to the consumption of a town of 50,000 inhabitants.

It uses the biomass resulting from the Alvarez Forestal (a company within the Armando Alvarez Group) forestry operations as fuel, under a zero-waste model, making use of around 90,000 metric tons annually of forest by-products, which otherwise would remain in the mountain and become a greater risk for forest fires.

Sustainability in this type of bioenergy is based on a closed cycle. When combusted, the biomass releases CO2 into the atmosphere, the same CO2 that this by-product absorbed during its growth. When it is consumed sustainably, the cycle closes and the level of CO2 in the atmosphere remains constant, so that its use does not contribute to generating climate change.

Renewable energy

Alternative energy originated exclusively from the use of forest waste, preventing any contribution towards accumulating greenhouse gases.

Focusing on 100% sustainability, the object is to make use of a by-product for the pulp/paper industry, comprised of tree tops, branches and bark from felled trees, which would otherwise end up as a simple waste product.
